When some of my medical-translation customers asked me to interpret for them, I accepted their request. I went through the formalities to complete the training, acquire the required certification, and reconfigure my office and IT system.
Medical interpreting is a challenging task. Not only does it demand all the skills required for medical translation, but it also entails:
· knowing the correct definition and translation of thousands of medical terms and having them on the tip of your tongue at any moment; and
· having the ability to listen, analyze, comprehend, and formulate a good interpretation of a spoken phrase immediately. Translators can take all the time they need to formulate the best possible translation of a given phrase; In medical interpreting, the patient is being rolled into the operating room and there is no time for research. You either know it or you don't!
I've completed the formal training, acquired the certificate, but most important of all, I enjoy the work!
