BM Sistemi, comprised of engineers specializing in sprinkler systems, immortalized their expert knowledge of the Italian Fire Protection code and NFPA standards in a sprinkler design package known as Spidi, very popular in Italy. Anticipating a market for the package in North and South America, they had decided to localize the software in English and Spanish and called on Real Bridges to carry out the job.
As the English version translator, my role entailed becoming very versed in fire-protection engineering, learning how to use the software, and delving deep into the terminology in Italian and English to consistently translate the GUI, menus, commands, and manual.
For the Spanish version, I recruited a Venezuelan engineer who worked onsite at the Ragusa office to translate and localize the Spanish version together with the companies programmers. The project involved a trip to the USA to explore marketing opportunities and required about a year of intense work to complete.
